The Beginner’s Guide to PCB Design

Time is a very important concept and as such, if you are going to design your own printed circuit board (PCB) then it is beneficial if you do this correctly right from the start. This guide is going to help you do just that as it will cover everything that you could possibly need to know when designing your very own PCB. The basics will be laid out in a way that is easy to understand, as well as the best practices, so that you are sufficiently prepared to design the best circuit board possible. Continue reading to find out more.

PCB and Flex Design Basics

There are a number of helpful websites out there, such as Altium, which will be able to assist when it comes to putting together your own PCB design, but it is important that you still have an understanding about the basics before you get stuck in. A PCB is a flat plate or base of insulating materials which has on it some kind of pattern that conducts different materials and components. Some of these projects can be quite complex, whereas others are a lot more simplistic in nature.

Learning the basics of PCBs is incredibly important due to the fact multiple extensive revisions will result in massive delays in the completion of your project. This won’t only lead to delays but will end up costing you more money as well. If you need any further help then you should consider working with engineering experts from the very beginning so that there are not any mistakes in the overall design of your PCB. This might cost you more from the outset, but you will save money thanks to there not being as many delays.

Best Practices for PCB Design

There are a number of practices which are important and will help you massively with the overall design of your PCB. Firstly, it is important that you are communicating with the PCB or flex application engineer from the outset of the job. When you communicate you should discuss everything that you are going to need when taking on your project. When you remain in contact with the PCB provider that you’ve chosen to work with, you’re ensuring that you are both operating on the same page. This means there is less likely to be any confusion throughout the execution of the project, so there won’t be the need for extensive revisions.

Granted, it’s quite rare that a PCB is going to be 100% perfectly designed right from the off, but you are increasing this likelihood when you communicate effectively. It will be programmed more or less correctly right from the word go and any revisions needed aren’t going to be major ones that will completely derail the entire project.

Another good practice is to have the right board size whenever you submit a design. Not only that, but you need to have the correct trace width, materials, tolerances, and component placement; not to mention, if you are using flex then you are going to have to determine whether or not the design is static, dynamic, or just partly flexible. Reach out to whoever is manufacturing your PCB and request these specifications, and make sure throughout the design process that you are keeping them in mind as they are incredibly important.

It’s important that you are also considering the whole environment in which your product is going to need to function. Is the environment going to be relatively non-extreme; for example, in a phone or within a computer? Alternatively, is the environment going to be very extreme, such as during an explosion? Depending on the environment, the design is going to need to be altered so that it can withstand the necessary conditions.

It’s only right that you have a lot of questions surrounding the whole PCB design and layout process, so you should certainly consider working with a reputable PCB provider. They should have a plethora of experience and as such are going to be in a good position to answer all of your questions and smooth out the process as much as possible.

Don’t Rush or Worry About PCB Design

If you are just getting started in the world of PCB design then you likely have lots of questions and are worried about the process. Don’t let this be the case. Everyone has to start somewhere and as such, you need to begin the process and learn as you go. Therefore, it’s a good idea to work with a reputable expert who is going to be able to provide plenty of advice along the way to help you.
